Recently there was a situation where I made a very bad decision – calling out a local businesses on what I considered irrelevant information regarding the #greenvillenc tag. I do not determine relevancy neither does any other Twitter user – Relevancy is determined by the community who uses the tag, not one central source aka “The Twitter Police”.

To play back the scenario in case this is new – here it is.

I sent a public tweet to East Carolina Tech (@ecarolinatech) saying their last 3 tweets were irrelevant to the #greenvillenc tag… like I said – bad decision on my part. From there it spiraled into a back and forth over the issue with other users. What you did not see is the exchange of emails between me and the owner of East Carolina Tech.

Here is a snippet of the apology I sent to him:

“What has now transpired is very unprofessional on our part considering the very thing we are trying to do (educating everyday business owners on the use of social media) and that both concerns me and irritates me at the same time…

GreenvilleTweets group was built around one principle – everyone is invited and no one looked down upon – and that very principle was shot yesterday and last night. I have spent time, money and resources to build this up as I am sure you have with East Carolina Tech and calling a legit business a spammer without knowing the entire situation is bad form.

I wish you and your company the best and I hope we can all come out of this better.”

If this situation put a bad taste in anyones mouth – I apologize, I was in the wrong.

So let’s say bye to “The Twitter Police” and hello to an open platform that accepts any and all tweets regardless of personal interest.

Sticking with the slogan – “All are welcome”

If you have questions let me know below – I will answer them. You can always email me at brad@bradproctor.com as well.

Thanks for reading.

I overheard some things tonight at the Tweetup that concerned me because some go against the very fundamental ideals that GreenvilleTweets is based upon.

GreenvilleTweets is not a club or even a group – it is way more organically formed than traditional meetup groups. There is usually no set agenda, rules, regulations or dues. The only rule is to have fun and meet other people.

Each tweetup is completely open to anyone that wants to attend and trust me we welcome anyone new with open arms.

It is simply summed up in one word – Community.

For instance here are some different definitions of the word community:

Group of people living in a particular local area – #greenvillenc
Common ownership – GreenvilleTweets is community driven
A group having common interests – Simply put we all love Twitter and social interaction

With that being said, GreenvilleTweets had a very humble beginning – It started with 3 people. Me, my wife and Matt Long (@mclgreenville) outside of Starbucks one cold night. Amazingly it grew from that to what it is now, a flourishing community of talented people that all have one thing in mind – building and developing a community.

For me GreenvilleTweets is not about fame and fortune – it is about building a community in Greenville that wants to better ourselves and our city.

And for the record – I make not one dime off any of this… if anything I loose money.

But for me the impact I see the growing Greenville Twitter community having within our city makes it all worth it.

So from here on out let’s act like a community and strive to be the best we can be for the good of not only ourselves but our community, #greenvillenc, as a whole.

If you have never attended a tweetup I strongly urge you to do so. We will not bite – I promise. If you have a concern about any of this email me – brad@bradproctor.com and let me know. My goal is to make each tweetup a place where it is easy to meet new people.

Hope to see you next time.

This post was from the heart so if you have questions let me know below – I will answer them. You can always email me at brad@bradproctor.com as well.

Thanks for reading.

Questions you may have:

What is a Tweetup?
A Tweetup is simply a meet-up of area twitter users. It is a time to get to know others in the community and share thoughts and ideas.

What should I bring?
Yourself and anyone that you think may be interested in joining in the fun, whether they are on Twitter or not. You may also want to bring a way to update your Twitter account; laptop, mobile phone, iPod or any other device – because you will meet new Tweeple that you will want to follow.

Bring business cards and plenty of them as a Tweetup is a great place to promote both yourself and your business.

Does it cost anything?
The #greenvillenc Tweetup is completely FREE.

How can I help?
Tell everyone you know online and offline! Send out a tweet about the Tweetup or retweet a@greenvillenc tweet regarding the tweetup details.

If you have any additional questions or comments feel free to emailbrad@greenvilletweets.com or DM @greenvillenc.

Hope to see you all there!
